Numeracy teaching in the Junior School focuses on developing number sense and building automatic response. Foundation students count numbers in sequence, continue and create patterns, sort objects, and compare the lengths of objects. Students use materials to model authentic problems and familiar counting sequences to solve unfamiliar problems. Year 1 and Year 2 students extend their understanding of Number and number operations (multiplication, division, addition and subtraction) and explore concepts of geometry (shape and location), fractions and formal units of measurement.
Senior School students are grouped for instruction, according to ability, to ensure point-of-need teaching. This allows each student the opportunity to engage in learning activities appropriate to their learning needs. Students participate in five sessions of explicit Numeracy teaching each week. We pride ourselves on extending our students’ mathematical knowledge. Senior School students take part in Maths Games and Maths Olympiad to further develop their problem solving skills.
In addition to high-quality teaching, Year 3 and Year 5 students sit the National Assessment Program: Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) Test each year and BHPS prides itself on achieving outstanding results. Senior School students also sit the University of New South Wales ICAS Mathematics assessment each year. BHPS students achieve outstanding results in this independent assessment, further evidencing our priority to high-quality Numeracy teaching.
